Inside Welbeck's Game Department

Reg Betts and his team of gamekeepers diligently work across 16,000 acres of the expansive Welbeck Estate, overseeing The Welbeck Lakes Fishery, providing general security to the estate, and rearing game birds and deer throughout the estate’s beautiful woodland.

Careful management of estate woodland by the Welbeck gamekeepers creates a rich habitat for a wide array of wild bird species and several areas of the estate are designated as SSSI (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) by Natural England. In season, both wild and reared game are available for sale in the Welbeck Farm Shop butchery.

Game shooting has a rich history at Welbeck. Reg and his team proudly upkeep this tradition through the organisation of private shoots on the estate. Get a glimpse into the history of this sport at Welbeck through images and notes from Welbeck curators, Derek Adlam and Gareth Hughes.
