Ornamental Embroidery Workshop

The Harley Gallery

Ornamental Embroidery Workshop

17th-century style silk and gold embroidery inspired workshop.

We are pleased to welcome back Ornamental Embroidery this year to run another of their highly successful embroidery workshops. The two-day workshop will be based on an early seventeenth-century embroidered book binding belonging to Lady Brilliana Harley (1598-1643). Lady Harley was an accomplished needlewoman, and we know from her correspondence that she stitched a number of designs specially created for her by father and son pattern drawers Roger and John Nelham.

Inspired by this beautiful book, students will work on an embroidered sampler suitable for a picture panel or needle-case, using a variety of surface stitches in silks and metal threads on a silk satin ground.  This workshop includes a guided tour of The Portland Collection, where you will discover more about the renowned collection and have a special viewing of Lady Brilliana Harley’s book.
