North Notts BookBench Trail

A colourfully designed bench that celebrates Welbeck’s Duchess of Newcastle, Margaret Cavendish, is now on display within the Courtyard at Welbeck.

Created by Harley Gallery Co-ordinator, Caroline Greyling, the bench forms part of the BookBench Trail that was organised by North Notts BID in collaboration with Wild in Art.

The trail sees 40 uniquely designed benches across the region and Welbeck’s Courtyard boasts not one, but two! A second bench, created by local school children, will also be on show for eight weeks throughout the summer, near The Harley Gallery

The BookBench project showcases the area’s rich literary history and the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower journey to the New World. Caroline’s design was inspired by Margaret Cavendish, née, Lucas, who was the first known published writer of science fiction and was one of the most prolific authors and philosophers of the 17th century.

“I was first asked to create the bench in the early part of 2020,” explained Caroline. “I worked furiously on the design and then we had lockdown and the project was put on hold. It's been good to have been involved. I have been able to work on it over the last year and it’s been really fun to create.”
