Exhibition | ICONOCLASH
Ian Kirkpatrick’s riotous, colourful art set to brighten up winter at the Harley Gallery.
Ian Kirkpatrick’s brand-new exhibition ICONOCLASH will be on show at the Harley Foundation from 26 October until 5 January. In this free-entry exhibition, global events, video games, and ancient artefacts collide in larger-than-life artworks that tell darker stories about our modern world.
Drawing together symbols from diverse sources, such as cartoons and cave art, acclaimed British-Canadian artist Ian Kirkpatrick remixes these icons to tell his own stories about the complexities of modern life. In his ornate and layered artworks, these familiar symbols reflect Ian’s search for meaning in a world of increasing uncertainty.
The exhibition will include large-scale sculptures, enormous quilted wall pieces and digital artworks turned embroideries. Look beyond the kaleidoscopic colours and graphic icons; visitors will uncover stories of migration, war, climate change and consumerism. Each piece challenges you to reconsider the symbols that shape our world.
Since 2017, Ian has been working in the public sphere, producing large-scale murals and sculptures for clients, including the London 2012 Olympics, the Tour de France and the Oxford Museum of Natural History. He recently completed a huge mural in Millennium Square, Leeds and an 8-metre-tall brass mural for Cunard’s new cruise ship, the Queen Anne.
Supported by Arts Council England, ICONOCLASH invites visitors of all ages to engage with colourful, playful pieces filled with infographics, emojis, and contemporary hieroglyphs. Alongside the exhibition, Ian will visit the gallery on November 16th and 29th to run children’s craft workshops and a gallery talk. For more information and booking, please click here
