The Welbeck Project

During its long history the Welbeck estate has adapted and evolved. From its foundation as a monastery to its time as country seat for a succession of Dukes of Portland, the estate surrounding Welbeck Abbey has changed many times over.

It is that ability to adapt that is enabling the estate to tackle head on the challenges of changing times. The Welbeck Project is a long-term plan that is securing the estate’s future by building a strong creative and sustainable community where people can both live and work.

A unique set of heritage buildings at the heart of the estate was developed by the 5th Duke of Portland in the 19th century. The buildings remain some of the best examples of their kind in the country and have been sensitively converted to create an inspirational environment for creative industries, the arts, education and artisan food producers.

Behind the impressive facades are now modern offices and workspaces. The buildings, first built 150 years ago, have a new purpose and are preserved for another century or more.

The Welbeck Project is all about looking to the future and being nimble but, all the while, maintaining the heart, soul and integrity of Welbeck.

Completed Developments

Already the former fire stables have been transformed to house The School of Artisan Food and Welbeck Bakehouse. The estate’s former Gas Works were transformed to create The Harley Gallery.

In recent years, some of the old almshouses, known as The Winnings, have been transformed into cosy holiday cottages. Meanwhile, a group of barns at Holbeck and a former farm worker’s cottage were given a new lease of life when turned into holiday accommodation. Other buildings have been transformed into homes to let.

Development Opportunities

What next? There are further plans to develop more of the estate’s heritage buildings and create yet more opportunities for people to live and work on the estate...
