Our Vision

Welbeck Project

The Welbeck Project is an ambitious plan to build a thriving community based on the four pillars of Rural Diversification, Education, Creative Industries and the Arts.
From its foundation as a monastery to its time as a country seat for a succession of Dukes of Portland, the estate surrounding Welbeck Abbey has changed many times over.

The Welbeck Project is a long-term plan that is securing the estate’s future by building a strong creative and sustainable community where people can both live and work.

A unique set of heritage buildings at the heart of the estate was developed by the 5th Duke of Portland in the 19th century. The buildings remain some of the best examples of their kind in the country and have been sensitively converted to create an inspirational environment for creative industries, the arts, education and artisan food producers.

Behind the impressive facades are now modern offices and workspaces. The buildings, first built 150 years ago, have a new purpose and are preserved for another century or more.

The Welbeck Project is all about looking to the future and being nimble but, all the while, maintaining the heart, soul and integrity of Welbeck.

Rural Diversification

At the heart of the Welbeck Project lies the principle of rural diversification. Rather than relying solely on traditional agriculture, Welbeck champions a wide array of sustainable enterprises that enrich both the local economy and landscape. The estate’s historic farms now coexist with ventures such as the Welbeck Farm Shop, the Brewery, Stichelton Dairy, and the Welbeck Bakehouse, all of which prioritise high-quality, locally sourced ingredients.

Furthermore, Welbeck’s rural diversification extends to hospitality, with charming accommodation options including converted cottages and tranquil retreats. These enterprises enable the estate to preserve its architectural legacy, support local employment, and invite visitors to experience the region's richness.

Education

Education forms the backbone of Welbeck’s commitment to lifelong learning and personal development. The estate is home to The School of Artisan Food, a renowned centre for teaching traditional and contemporary food crafts. Here, students from across the world learn bread baking, cheese making, butchery, and more, guided by master artisans. The School’s ethos is deeply rooted in sustainability, hands-on practice, and the celebration of local resources.

Creative Industries

Welbeck has become a dynamic hub for creative enterprise, nurturing artists, designers, and makers. The Harley Foundation Studios provides affordable workspaces for over thirty independent creatives, from ceramicists to textile artists. This thriving network encourages collaboration, the sharing of ideas, and the production of unique, handcrafted works.

In addition, the Harley Foundation supports creative entrepreneurship through regular exhibitions and retail displays, where artists and makers showcase their talents and engage with the wider public. The synergy between heritage and innovation creates a community where creativity is celebrated and economically viable.

The Arts

The arts are interwoven into the fabric of Welbeck’s identity. The Harley Gallery, situated at the heart of the estate, presents an ever-changing programme of exhibitions, featuring contemporary artists alongside historical treasures from the Portland Collection. These exhibitions invite visitors to encounter works of international significance while appreciating the talents of local artists.

Welbeck’s commitment to the arts also encompasses a vibrant cultural calendar that enriches the community's social life and ensures that the arts remain accessible, relevant, and inspiring.

The Welbeck Project is a testament to the power of vision and collaboration. Its four pillars—rural diversification, education, creative industries, and the arts—are not merely separate initiatives but interconnected strands in the tapestry of a thriving community. By nurturing tradition and embracing change, Welbeck continues to shape a future where heritage is honoured, creativity flourishes, and rural life is celebrated in all its diversity.
